P13E2: AdBlue (DEF) Level Too Low — Engine Start Prevented
DEF (AdBlue) is critically empty and the emissions system is about to block engine starts — refill DEF immediately to restore starting.
P13E2 on the Mercedes Sprinter VS30 is the most urgent of the AdBlue (DEF) level warnings. Diesel emissions regulations require the SCR system to dose AdBlue to reduce NOx, and the law mandates that the vehicle progressively limit operation — and ultimately prevent restarting — if the DEF tank runs dry. P13E2 indicates you've reached the no-start threshold. The fix is almost always simple: refill the DEF tank with fresh, spec-compliant AdBlue. After an adequate refill (often several gallons to clear the threshold), the system should allow normal starting again, though a short drive or scan-tool reset may be needed to clear the countdown. If the level reads low immediately after a genuine refill, suspect a DEF level sensor or quality-sensor fault rather than an actual empty tank.
- AdBlue fill level too low — engine start not possible.
- Dashboard warning that engine start will be prevented / countdown to no-start
- Engine may not restart once the tank is empty
- AdBlue/DEF warning light and message
- Reduced power before lockout in some cases
- DEF (AdBlue) tank empty or critically low — refill needed
- Faulty DEF level sensor reporting empty
- DEF quality sensor fault
- Contaminated or wrong fluid in the DEF tank
- SCR/DEF system fault preventing level recognition after refill
- 1Refill the DEF/AdBlue tank with fresh, spec-compliant fluid (ISO 22241 / DEF). Add enough to clearly exceed the low threshold (often a few gallons).
- 2Cycle the ignition; on many vans a short drive is needed for the system to re-measure and clear the lockout.
- 3Scan and record codes; if P13E2 persists after a genuine refill, read the DEF level and quality sensor live data.
- 4Inspect for contaminated/wrong fluid in the tank.
- 5If the level sensor reads empty with a full tank, replace the faulty DEF level sensor.
- 6Clear codes with a scan tool if they don't self-clear after the system recognizes the refill.
- 1Clean or replace a carbon-clogged EGR valve and clear the passages.
- 2Force a regeneration, or replace the DPF if it is aged or damaged.
- 3Replace faulty differential-pressure, NOx, or exhaust-temperature sensors.
- 4Repair the SCR/AdBlue dosing system or refill with correct-quality DEF.
- 5Fix upstream combustion faults that prevent proper regeneration.
- AdBlue / DEF fluid~$15–$40; refill the tank
- DEF level sensor~$80–$250 if sensor is faulty
