Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low
The common-rail fuel pressure has dropped below the ECU's commanded value, usually from a failing high-pressure pump, a leaking injector, or a clogged fuel filter.
What this code means
P0087 on the Mercedes Sprinter VS30 means the engine control unit (ECU) commanded a target rail pressure but the rail pressure sensor reported a value too far below it. On the OM642 3.0L V6 diesel, fuel is pressurized by a high-pressure pump and stored in the common rail at pressures up to ~1,800 bar before the piezo/solenoid injectors fire it into the cylinders. When actual rail pressure can't keep up with demand — especially under load or acceleration — the ECU sets P0087 and typically drops the van into limp mode to protect the injection system. The most common VS30 causes are a clogged fuel filter, a weak or worn high-pressure pump, a leaking injector bleeding pressure back to the tank, or air ingress on the suction side. Because this is a fuel-delivery fault, P0087 is one of the more serious Sprinter codes. Running the engine with chronically low rail pressure can accelerate pump and injector wear, so diagnose it promptly rather than just clearing it.

Diagnostic steps
- Scan and record all stored codes. Note any related codes (P0088, P0191, P1775) present at the same time.
- Read freeze-frame data: capture RPM, load, fuel temperature, and rail pressure at the moment the code set.
- Visually inspect fuel lines, the filter housing, and connections for leaks, weeping, or loose fittings on the suction side.
- With a scan tool, monitor live rail pressure (actual vs. commanded) at idle and during a snap-throttle. A large deviation confirms a delivery problem.
- Replace or rule out the fuel filter first — a clogged filter is the cheapest and most common cause.
- Perform an injector return (back-leakage) test: excessive return from one injector points to a leaking injector bleeding rail pressure.
- Test low-pressure (lift pump) supply pressure to confirm the HP pump is being fed adequately.
- If filter, lines, and injectors are good but the pump can't build commanded pressure, the high-pressure pump is the likely culprit — escalate to a specialist for pump replacement and rail bleed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive my Sprinter with P0087 active?
You can usually limp it home, but you shouldn't keep driving on it. The van will likely be in reduced-power mode, and sustained low rail pressure accelerates wear on the high-pressure pump and injectors. Diagnose and fix it before normal driving.
Will P0087 clear itself?
No. The code will not self-clear while the fault is present, and even after a repair you'll typically need to clear it with a scan tool. If it returns immediately, the underlying delivery problem hasn't been resolved.
Is P0087 usually just the fuel filter?
Often, yes — a clogged or overdue fuel filter is the most common and cheapest cause, so start there. But if a fresh filter doesn't fix it, suspect a leaking injector or a worn high-pressure pump.
