Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Efficiency Below Threshold
The ECU determined the diesel particulate filter isn't trapping/regenerating soot effectively, from a clogged, damaged, or failing DPF or its sensors.
Qué significa este código
P2002 on the Mercedes Sprinter VS30 indicates the diesel particulate filter (DPF) on bank 1 isn't performing within spec. The DPF traps soot from the exhaust and periodically burns it off during regeneration. If it becomes clogged beyond what regen can clear, gets damaged, or its differential-pressure sensor reports abnormal values, the ECU sets P2002. On the OM642, P2002 is frequently tied to a history of incomplete regenerations — lots of short trips, prior limp-mode events, or EGR/turbo faults that prevented proper regen. A heavily loaded DPF may need a forced regen, and a truly failed or cracked filter requires replacement. Because DPF replacement is expensive, diagnose carefully: confirm the differential-pressure sensor and exhaust temp sensors are accurate before condemning the filter itself.
Descripción oficial
- Diesel particulate filter efficiency insufficient.
Síntomas
- Check engine light, sometimes with a DPF warning
- Reduced power / limp mode
- Frequent or incomplete regeneration cycles
- Increased fuel consumption
- Excess exhaust smoke
- Strong exhaust smell
Advertencia — revísalo pronto
The ECU determined the diesel particulate filter isn't trapping/regenerating soot effectively, from a clogged, damaged, or failing DPF or its sensors.
Causas posibles
- DPF clogged with soot/ash beyond regen capacity
- History of incomplete regenerations (short trips, prior faults)
- Faulty DPF differential pressure sensor
- Faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor
- Cracked or internally damaged DPF substrate
- Upstream faults (EGR/turbo/injectors) preventing proper combustion and regen
Pasos de diagnóstico
- Scan and record all codes; note related codes (P2003, P242F, P2463, P0401).
- Read freeze-frame and live data: DPF differential pressure, soot load %, and exhaust gas temperatures.
- Verify the differential-pressure sensor and EGT sensors read plausibly (compare key-on values).
- Attempt a forced/service regeneration with a capable scan tool if soot load is high but the filter isn't damaged.
- Address any upstream faults (EGR, turbo, injectors) that prevent proper regen.
- If the DPF is cracked, ash-loaded beyond service, or won't recover after regen, replace or professionally clean it.
Reparaciones recomendadas
- Clean or replace a carbon-clogged EGR valve and clear the passages.
- Force a regeneration, or replace the DPF if it is aged or damaged.
- Replace faulty differential-pressure, NOx, or exhaust-temperature sensors.
- Repair the SCR/AdBlue dosing system or refill with correct-quality DEF.
- Fix upstream combustion faults that prevent proper regeneration.
Piezas que podrías necesitar
- DPF differential pressure sensor~$80–$220
- Exhaust gas temperature sensor~$60–$180
- Diesel particulate filter~$1,500–$3,000 if replacement needed
Preguntas frecuentes
Can I fix P2002 with a forced regen?
If the DPF is just heavily loaded with soot and not physically damaged, a forced/service regeneration can restore it. If the filter is cracked or ash-loaded beyond service life, regen won't help and it needs replacement.
What causes the DPF to fail early on a Sprinter?
Lots of short trips that never reach regen temperature, plus unresolved upstream faults (EGR clogging, turbo underboost, injector issues). Fixing those and taking occasional longer highway drives helps the DPF regenerate properly.
